The collection consists of personal correspondence, legal correspondence and business papers of Zachariah J. McChesney and his sons Adam McChesney and William J.B. McChesney. Personal correspondence conveys news of family and friends and includes letters from emigrants to Illinois and Georgia. Letters of interest include one from Leander J. McCormick discussing Robert McCormick and one from S.L. McKellar of California discussing dressmaking and fashions. Financial and legal correspondence includes discussions of cattle sales, the North River Navigation Company, guardianship accounts, and legal opinions. George M. Harrison is a correspondent. Business papers contain accounts to the McChesneys from various local merchants. Many are from T.H. Antrim and Company of Waynesboro, Virginia. Of interest is a letter, 1920, from Black Rock Radium Springs Hotel concerning the puchase of radium water. Business papers also contain cloth and accessory purchases of Ann M. Cochran, (a dressmaker?) An 1857 bill for a coffin and hearse is included. Legal papers include an 1844 indenture for Augusta County land, a memorandum of agreement establishing the firm of John T. Huff, and an undated survey of Spring Hill.
